The flood risk to the UK North Sea coast is at risk when several factors come together. Low pressure weather systems rotate anti clockwise and drift in from the Atlantic from a south-westerly (grey arrow) direction. Once out into the North Sea, combined with a high spring tide and low surface pressure (yellow arrows), the wind direction blows the sea towards land (blue arrows).
